I mean, I was thinking when I have visited Greenwich and straddled the Meridian for photos I usually orientate myself so that I am facing South so my right side is West and my left side is East. But when we read a map we always face North (if you see what I mean).
How about you?

if you are facing south , then left ie East and right is West ...I would have thought that if you face North, then West is left and East is right ... no ?

Do you mean Sirius? sort of at the bottom of the left leg of orion also known as Sotiris the soul of isis to the Ancient Egyptians? It is a double star/blue white and is large and very twinkly (because it is two stars Canis major and canis minor)?

Could well be .. it looks like an arch of two or three stars.. very bright and twinkly . I see it from my balcony , on the left. There are very few other stars visible.
The moon appears later on the left , but a lot later on .. probably after 2 am

That is a large bright white planet visible just after sunset in the south west ish or just before sunrise.

When I stand on my south-facing balcony ( I think I am facing south ) , the sun sets on my right ( west ) and rises in the east ( left )
Mind you , if I was facing North , east would be on my right and west on my left.
